SELF PORTRAIT DRAWINGS

pictures

If my discipline was better, I'd have a self-portrait for EVERY birthday instead of just a handful. The different styles show both my current interests in illustration and the level of my current skill. They're in no particular order, so you might have to judge which came first for yourself.

SELF PORTRAIT 1 - A very early, very quick sketch, done on a day when I was feeling less than happy with myself.

SELF PORTRAIT 2 - A more complex foray into shading and creating a three dimensional shape. Also a time when I was preoccupied with the crenelations of the ear and capturing the three dimensional shapes of the eyes and nose.

SELF PORTRAIT 3 - A rather haughty and interesting self portrait. I like the shading of the eyes and the shape of the hair and the emotion in the face.

SELF PORTRAIT 4 - A quickie self portrait with one of my fictional characters, the Red Queen, looming over my shoulder, singing "Would you hurt yourself darlin' before me. . ." I'm wearing one of my favorite necklaces, made of bent horseshoe nails.

SELF PORTRAIT 5 - Another quick portrait done working backstage at the Stratford Shakespearean Festival. I was taking care of child actors at the time, so crayons and ballpoint pen were the implements of choice.

SELF PORTRAIT 6 - A fanciful sketch done for a solo art show -- I like the rendering of the hair in particular.

SELF PORTRAIT 7 - This portrait was done at the last moment on a birthday with the clock ticking down to midnight. I only had lined paper around to draw on, so you can see the remainder of the blue rules I didn't remove.

SELF PORTRAIT 8 - One of my favorites. I was house- and cat-sitting in Stratford at the time I painted this, and so it became the "Self Portrait In The 'Cat House'".

SELF PORTRAIT 9 - This was done during a period of great change and upheaval in all aspects of my life, and represents me moving out of a solidified, bricked in existence toward a less defined, more fanciful period.

SELF PORTRAIT 10 - Sadly, this portrait was damaged (when I dropped one of my sketchbooks in water - I wish I could say that was a more rare occurrence than it is!) and the bright pink from another drawing leached through onto the page. I kind of like the result though, especially in light of the almost tentative expression on the finished face.

SELF PORTRAIT 11 - This is one of the most recent of my self portraits. I look kind of sad or stern, but I'm feeling strong and beautiful. . .
